Unveiling Ghanaian Folklore: A Digital Journey with the National Folklore Board and Wiki Loves Living Heritage Ghana
On August 29th, 2024, the Accra Tourist Information Center became the epicentre of a transformative initiative. The National Folklore Board (NFB) and Wiki Loves Living Heritage Ghana joined forces to embark on a mission to digitize and share Ghanaian folklore and living heritage on Wikimedia platforms.
A Fusion of Expertise
This collaboration was a perfect blend of the NFB’s deep-rooted knowledge of Ghanaian folklore and the Wiki Loves Living Heritage team’s proficiency in Wikimedia platforms. Their shared goal was to:

Participants learned the fundamentals of creating and editing articles and understanding the importance of verifiable and neutral content. This session laid the groundwork for contributing high-quality information about Ghanaian folklore to the world’s largest online encyclopedia.
Wikimedia Commons Overview
In the next session, Maxwell Beganim guided attendees through Wikimedia Commons, the media repository of the Wikimedia projects. Participants discovered how to upload and manage media files, ensuring that images and videos of Ghanaian cultural heritage are accessible to a global audience. This session emphasized the importance of proper licensing and attribution.
Wikidata Essentials
Joris Darlington Quarshie then introduced the group to Wikidata, the structured data repository. This session focused on how to structure and query data, making it easier to link and integrate information across Wikimedia projects. Participants learned how to create and manage data entries, enhancing the visibility and accessibility of Ghanaian folklore.
Wikisource Introduction
The final session, led by Joris Darlington Quarshie, delved into Wikisource, the digital library of free content textual sources. Attendees explored the process of digitizing and proofreading texts, ensuring that Ghanaian folklore and historical documents are preserved and made available online.
